Survey: Less hiring in 2009

Most companies plan to either maintain their current staffing level or cut workers in 2009, according to a new report by CareerBuilder.com.

Of the 3,259 hiring managers and human resource professionals surveyed, 16 percent said they plan to reduce their number of full-time, permanent employees this year, while 56 percent said they expect no change. Meanwhile, 14 percent said they intend to hire more workers in 2009. That number is down from a year ago, when 32 percent said they would expand their work force in 2008.

Thirteen percent said they are unsure about their staffing needs in 2009.

"Looking ahead, recruitment levels are expected to be lower in the new year," CareerBuilder.com CEO Matt Ferguson said in a statement, "but employers are not out of the mix completely. Instead they’re taking ‘a wait and see’ approach to hiring.”
