Hiddencroft Vineyards takes top award at Capitol reception

Clyde and Terry Housel's Hiddencroft Vineyards opened its tasting room on Axline Road west of Lovettsville just this June, but it is already turning some wine lovers' heads (and noses).

At the Sept. 17 Eastern Seaboard Wine Competition their 2007 Traminette won best of category, and they accepted the award from U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10th district) at a reception in the Rayburn Office Building of the U.S. Capitol.

The U.S. Congressional Wine Caucus sponsored the reception and awards.

Traminette is a hybrid grape developed at Cornell University in the 1960s. It produces a wine with many characteristics and the flavor of one of its parents, the German Gewurztraminer.

Hiddencroft Vineyards is open Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 6 p.m. Call 540-535-5367, or go to www.hiddencroftvineyards.com.
