Inova: Rival hospital OK on U.S. 50

Inova Loudoun Hospital's Chief Executive Officer Randy Kelley told county supervisors Sept. 15 that Loudoun's second hospital should be on U.S. 50 in the Dulles District.
Kelley said Inova will not oppose an HCA application to move its 164-bed acute-care hospital – approved by the state for Broadlands -- to land it owns on U.S. 50.
Nor will Inova file a competing application to build a hospital on land it owns on U.S. 50, adjacent to the HCA property, Kelley said.
A hospital on U.S. 50 fulfills the county's Comprehensive Plan for health care and meets the needs of Loudoun's growing population in the south and west, Kelley said. If HCA gains land-use approval and builds in Broadlands, Kelley added, no hospital will be built by anyone on U.S. 50 for at least the next 10 years.
HCA executive Mark Foust said the county's next hospital should be built where it makes the most sense, "and that's Ashburn, the epicenter of Loudoun's population now and in the future," he said.
Both the state health commissioner and the county's planning staff agree that Broadlands is the correct location for the next hospital, Foust said.
HCA's application to build in Broadlands is scheduled for a Planning Commission public hearing Sept. 25.
