Local company ships satellite

Dulles-based Orbital Sciences Corp. shipped its newest Orbiting Carbon Observatory satellite Nov. 8 to a launch site at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The cross-country trip took three days. It arrived Nov. 11.

Made for NASA, the satellite eventually will be launched into space to collect precise measurements of carbon dioxide concentrations in the Earth’s atmosphere and to report them to scientists studying global climate change.

The satellite is one of seven scientific spacecraft that Orbital has built or is in the process of building for NASA.

Ashburn girl to sing jingle

Harris Teeter Inc. announced last week that Ashburn child celebrity Kaitlyn Maher, 4, will sing the company's jingle on its television commercials airing this holiday season. Kaitlyn competed on NBC's “America's Got Talent” this summer, making it all the way to the finals.

Effort under way to save silo

Loudoun Supervisor Andrea McGimsey (D-Potomac) has started a petition drive to stop a strip mall owner from razing a local landmark.

Saul Centers Inc., according to McGimsey, has applied with the county to demolish the silo at CountrySide Marketplace at the intersection of Countryside Boulevard and Route 7 to make room for additional parking and to improve access to some stores.

Since it is on private property, she said there is little the county can do to prevent Saul from tearing down the structure.

To get a copy of the petition, e-mail McGimsey at Andrea.McGimsey@loudoun.gov.

Bad earnings reported

Satellite imagery company GeoEye Inc., which is based in Dulles, announced Nov. 11 that its third quarter earnings dropped 33 percent from the same quarter last year. The company said a delay in launching its newest satellite may have forced many of its orders to be diverted to its competition.

Thanksgiving is costlier

The price to feed 10 adults a Thanksgiving dinner will go up this year in Virginia.

According to a Virgina Farm Bureau Federation survey, the average price to prepare a spread of turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls, peas, cranberries, a tray of carrots and celery, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream will cost on average $45.89 to prepare. That is up 12.6 percent from 2007.

“We are seeing higher prices for livestock than in the past, and energy costs are the big culprit,” Jonah Bowels, the organization's risk marketing coordinator, said in a statement. "The average cost of the centerpiece of the meal, a turkey, has risen by more than $2 this year."

Another winery opens

Loudoun's newest winery is now open to visitors. Casanel Vineyards, the county's 23rd, is at 17952 Canby Road in Leesburg. The owners are Nelson and Kathleen DeSouza. See Casanelvineyards.com, or call 540-751-1776 for details.
