Jobless rate climbsThe U.S. Department of Labor announced Nov. 7 that the nation's unemployment rate jumped nearly half a percentage point in October to 6.5 percent, the highest level since 1994.
In the past 12 months, the number of unemployed people across the country increased by 2.8 million, and the unemployment rate rose by 1.7 percentage points, according to the Department of Labor.
According to the latest figures from the Virginia Employment Commission, Northern Virginia's unemployment rate stands at 3.2 percent, up from 2.3 percent a year ago.
Vineyard grand opening
Loudoun's newest winery will host a grand opening celebration Nov. 15-16. Sunset Hills Vineyard is at 38295 Fremont Overlook Lane in Purcellville. Start your own business
The Loudoun Small Business Development Center will host a seminar on how to start your own business Nov. 18 in Sterling.
Robin Suomi, a small-business specialist, will lead participants through the essential steps for successfully starting a small business. Thomas Ntuk, an insurance specialist, will discuss the types of insurance needed for small businesses.

Reserve spot at gala
You can register now to attend the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce's 40th anniversary gala Dec. 4. The event will take place at Lansdowne's National Conference Center, 18980 Upper Belmont Place. Tickets are $125. Register online at www.loudounchamber.org.
Symposium scheduled
A symposium on investments, mortgages and home values will take place in Potomac Falls Nov. 17. Speakers include a senior vice president at Morgan Stanley, a member of the Ryan & Coppola Law Firm, a mortgage expert and an expert on home values and options. Community service awarded
Reston Limousine last month received the prestigious Community Service Award at the Limo Digest Show in Atlantic City, N.J., the nation's largest limousine conference.
Each year, Reston Limousine donates about $150,000 in services and cash and more than 1,500 man hours to causes in the Washington, D.C., area.
Founded in 1990, the company with a 130-vehicle fleet is headed by President and CEO Kristina Bouweiri from Leesburg.
Grocer cutting prices
Wegmans Food Markets Inc., which has 72 supermarkets in five states, including one in Sterling, announced Nov. 6 that it is cutting the prices of hundreds of its items by up to 20 percent because of the weakening economy.
