Classic Car Cruise-In, musical program, Loudoun Douglass Alumni Scholarship, NAACP Golf Tournament, condolences

Classic Car Cruise-In: Bring the family and travel back to the past – Saturday, May 31, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at historic Morven Park. The event features food, fun, an oldies D.J., free hay rides to the 19th-century Carriage Museum, portraits in a classic car, and a display of more than 30,000 Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars. Proceeds benefit Morven Park's educational programs and the Loudoun/Douglass Alumni Association. The admission fee is $5, senior citizens $3, kids under 12 get in free. Classic car registration fee (1983 or older) if preregistered is $8; at the gate it will be $10. Gates open at 8 a.m. for cars. Flea market registration costs $25. Musical program: First Mount Olive Baptist Church Missionary Society will present a musical program Saturday, May 31, 5-7 p.m. This musical will feature the Golden Tones, the Gospel Tones-Rectortown, the King Sisters, First Mount Olive Baptist Church Men’s Chorus and Mount Zion Men’s Chorus. Refreshments will be served following the program.

Scholarship: Applications are being accepted for the Loudoun/Douglass Alumni Association Scholarship. Please contact Mary Randolph at 703-777-8270 to request an application. The scholarship deadline is June 1, and all applications must be postmarked by this date.

Loudoun NAACP Golf Tournament: The Loudoun NAACP will be holding a golf fundraiser Wednesday, June 18, at Stoneleigh Golf Club in Round Hill. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and shotgun start is at 9 a.m. The format is Captain's Choice. It is $85 per person, which includes lunch. Prizes will be given for longest drive and closest to the pin (men and women), and a car will be awarded to the hole-in-one winner. To register, contact Michael Weatherton at 703-729-7360. Teams are welcome, and deadline for registration is May 28.

Condolences: Samuel “Sammy K” Winston, 86, died at his home on May 20 in Leesburg. Mr. Winston was born on March 4, 1922, to the late Jennie Smith Winston and Clifton Winston in Leesburg. Sammy retired from the Barber & Ross Company after 28 years in 2002. Sammy was known throughout the Leesburg community, and you would see him all over town taking his daily walks. He enjoyed meeting his friends at the mini-mart or at the park, where he would share stories of Leesburg in the old days, or Redskin victories and stories about his beloved New York Yankees. Survivors include a brother, Nathaniel “Dee” Winston and sister-in-law Thelma of Charles Town, W.Va.; a son, Charles Mallory; grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 124 Park St. S.E., Vienna, VA 22183-0699.
