Battle of the Books: Dominion High School won the third annual Battle of the Books with the school’s first appearance at the event. The rookie team earned a total of 770 points while answering questions about the 12 books selected for the battle. The Dominion team includes Kyle Beebe, Trinity Edralin, Sarah Erlandson, Simone Erlandson, Fatima Haque, Ashleigh Holland, David Ingram, Nolan Kirkwood, Kyleigh Purks, Jannett Tran Nguyen and Jennifer Tran Nguyen.
Vice president: Farhath Alam, a junior at Dominion High School, was elected Virginia Student Council Association state vice president at the group’s 82nd annual convention. The association is a leadership learning organization for student leaders from private and public schools throughout Virginia.
Volunteers of the Year: Potomac Falls High School students Rachael Diniega and Joanne Guidry were honored by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors with a Loudoun Volunteer Services 2008 Outstanding Volunteer Team Award. The students were recognized with the entire 15-member team participating in the Claude Moore Community Builders Program.
In print: An article by Michele Rzewski Copeland, the Potowmack Elementary School librarian, has been accepted for publication in “Best Practices for Teaching Reading,” a book compiled by Randi Stone. Copeland’s article focuses on Potowmack Elementary’s summer reading program.
Plan ahead: Dominion Power is planning to perform maintenance work on May 29 in the area of Algonkian Parkway and Middlefield Drive. The project will interrupt electrical service in the area for about five hours that day, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Scrapbookers unite: The CountrySide Women’s Club is planning to start a scrapbooking group. A volunteer is needed to serve as group leader. Call 703-404-1083. Membership in the CountrySide Women’s Club is open to women living in CountrySide and the surrounding areas.
VFW: Sterling VFW Post 9478 meets May 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Falcons Landing. Call 703-406-0471.
Garden lovers: The newly formed Garden Group of the CountrySide Women’s Club heads to George Washington’s River Farm, the headquarters of the American Horticultural Society, on May 29. The outing includes lunch at Bastille in Alexandria. Carpools are forming at a variety of locations. Call 703-404-1083.
On stage: Potomac Falls High School presents “Damn Yankees” on May 29-31 at 7:30 p.m. and June 1 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $7 and are available at the door.
Farmers Market: The Cascades Farmers Market is open for business on June 1, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Senior Center at Cascades Marketplace. The available locally grown and locally made items include arugula, asparagus, basil, beef, beets, bok choy, breads, broccoli raab, cheese, chicken, cilantro, collards, dill, eggs, flowers, goat, jams and jellies, kale, lamb, lettuce, mushrooms, onions, parsley, pastries, pies, plants, pork, radishes, rhubarb, sage, salsa, soaps, sorrel, soups, spinach, strawberries, summer squash, Swiss chard, turkey, turnips, wine, wool and yogurt.
Quilters meeting: The CountrySide Quilters hold a business meeting and sit’n’sew on June 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Lutheran Church in Cascades. Bring a nonperishable food donation for the church’s LINK pantry. Call 703-450-2139.
