Brocke clinches another title for Spartans
Broad Run coach Pat Cassidy handed the ball to Trey Brocke to pitch yet another big game in the Dulles District baseball championship game versus Potomac Falls May 22 at Freedom High School.
And once again, Brocke delivered.
Brocke scattered six Panther hits in a complete-game victory as the Spartans won 8-2 to add the tournament title to their Dulles regular season championship.
Brocke, also the winning pitcher in the Spartans' regular-season title-clinching game each of the last two seasons, improved to 7-1 this year. It's an impressive record considering Brocke is Broad Run's No. 2 starter behind ace Cole Shain, who will pitch for William & Mary in college.
“Trey makes big pitches when he has to,” Spartans coach Pat Cassidy said. “He gets in a little bit of trouble every game. He doesn't throw the ball hard enough to power pitch to people. But he manages to get himself out of trouble when he gets into trouble. He throws strikes and makes the other team hit him.”
While Brocke was busy limiting the potent Potomac Falls offense, the Spartans displayed plenty of offensive punch themselves in the championship win.
Broad Run scored eight runs on 10 hits, including four runs in the fourth inning. The Spartans' No. 8 and 9 hitters in the lineup – Shane Vlasic and Patrick Murphy – combined for four hits.
Chris Jessop had two hits, stole two bases and scored twice, and Ryan Diviney drove in two runs. Kurt Reitzel also had two hits.
“This tournament did not mean anything to us in terms of having to win it. And to still go out there and not let down, I'm pretty proud of them,” Cassidy said.
“It's fun to win it and we are thrilled to win it,” Cassidy continued. “I'm glad we made it through the whole tournament healthy. It's a little bit of bragging rights.”
Both teams advanced to the Region II tournament. Potomac Falls secured a region berth with a 4-2 semifinal win over Park View May 21.
Chad McMichael blasted a two-run homer in the sixth inning for the winning runs, and Jacob Kline was the Panther winning pitcher in the semifinal victory.
Potomac Falls will host Fluvanna in the region quarterfinals May 26 at 5 p.m.
Broad Run earned a first-round bye and will host Louisa County or James Wood in the semifinals May 28 at 6 p.m.
“I told the kids we could not have put ourselves in any better position,” Cassidy said. “We are happy where we are, but we can't be satisfied because now we have to play as good or better than we have been. We have to stay hungry mentally.
“We've had a great season, but you can't take a night off at this point in the season or you go home. We have to be focused. We are going to play a good team at home Wednesday.”
