Briar Woods athletic director Breinig Sr. to retire
By Carl Lukat
Briar Woods High School athletic director Joe Breinig Sr. will retire at the end of this school year.
Breinig Sr. has worked in the school system for 40 years, including 28 years as Loudoun County High School's athletic director before taking over at Briar Woods one year prior to the school opening in 2005.
“40 years is what my target was,” Breinig Sr. said. “I’m healthy and I want to do some things I haven’t been able to do for the last 40 years. It was the right time.”
Breing Sr., whose son Joe Breinig Jr. is Park View’s athletic director, was named Virginia’s Group AA top athletic director in 2007.
“My projected date when I started at Briar Woods was to have most of our athletic teams at a competitive level by the end of our third year. We’ve done that,” Breinig Sr. said. “They have all done a great job. We have a great group of coaches and the community has been fantastic.”
Current Liberty High School athletic director Jerry Carter will take over as Briar Woods athletic director next school year. Carter held the same position at Liberty for 14 years.
Breinig Sr. worked with Carter when Liberty and Loudoun County competed in the Northwestern District and described him as a ‘super individual’.
