Human rights – on film and in discussion
The Human Rights International Traveling Film Festival is coming to the Cascades Library for three consecutive Thursdays in May. All screenings, recommended for ages 18 and older, start at 7 p.m. and include a scholar-led discussion follows.
May 8 – “A Lesson of Belarusian” – young activists support the democratic opposition candidate in a mass demonstration in Minsk's main square. Dr. Christopher Elzey, a Purdue Ph.D. who has played professional basketball in Australia, and western and eastern Europe, including the former Soviet Republic of Belarus, leads the discussion.
May 15 – “Enemies of Happiness” – the story of an Afghan woman who challenged the warlords and ran in the country's first democratic election in more than 30 years. Dr. Harry Butowsky, research historian with the National Park Service in Washington, D.C., leads the discussion.
May 22-- “Election Day” follows 12 Americans determined to make their votes count on Election Day 2004. Dr. Butowsky leads the discussion.
