Supervisors may ban roadside solicitation
By Jason Jacks
The Board of Supervisors may decide July 1 to ask state lawmakers to give the board permission to ban roadside solicitation in Loudoun. The issue is most prevalent along Route 7 in Sterling, where people representing various churches and charities stand at intersections to ask motorists stopped at traffic lights for donations.
Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio (R-Sterling) is the maker of the proposal. He told the Times-Mirror earlier this year that roadside solicitors pose a hazard to themselves and motorists by standing along busy intersections.
For commuters who regularly drive the Route 7 corridor, roadside solicitors are often seen at Route 7 and Potomac View Drive and Route 7 and Sterling Boulevard, two of Loudoun's most accident-prone spots, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Since the state has authority over most roads in Loudoun, lawmakers in Richmond would have to grant Loudoun permission to create an ordinance banning roadside solicitation. Arlington County and Vienna have similar ordinances in place.
