Suicidal man causes three-hour standoff in Lovettsville

A Lovettsville man is being held on a temporary detention order after threatening to commit suicide and shoot law enforcement officers, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

Deputies responded to a home on South Loudoun Street around 3:15 p.m. June 25 after a 59-year-old man called the police and made suicidal statements.

He also said that he had a gun, and he did not want law enforcement showing up at his house, Troxell said.

Members of the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team and Hostage Negotiations Unit went to the man's house.

It was unclear at the time if anyone else was inside the home and being held against his or her will. After nearly three hours of on-and-off negotiations, the man was persuaded to exit his house; he was taken into custody, Troxell said.

The man is being held on a temporary detention order at a local hospital. If he is charged with a crime for the incident, his name will be released at that time.
