New director

The Loudoun Literacy Council, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to improving literacy for children and adults in Loudoun County, has moved into downtown Leesburg and hired a new executive director.

The new office is at 204 S. King St., and Candace Olin Kroehl became the new director in May.

100 years in law

The law firm of McCandlish & Lillard, which traces its beginnings to the practice of F.D. Richardson in 1908, celebrated its centennial anniversary on June 19. The firm maintains an office at 212 E. Market St., Leesburg, and an office in Fairfax at 11350 Randon Hills Road.

 

Bowman wins Helios award

Bowman Consulting, a Chantilly-based engineering, planning, surveying, environmental and landscape architectural consulting firm, has received the 2008 Helios Apollo Award for a mid-size company for its investment in employee development initiatives.

The Helios award was created by the Society for Human Resource Management Washington Chapter and Helios HR. The awards recognize Washington, D.C.-area organizations that promote employee growth and development as an intentional part of their organizational culture.

 

Friendship House garden

Members of Loudoun County's Friendship House opened the new Healing Garden greenhouse June 13 at 16580 Meadowview Court S.E. in Leesburg.

Loudoun County's Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services operates Friendship House, which provides all-day rehabilitation programs to its members whose daily lives have been impaired by mental illness.

The greenhouse has been built through a partnership and coordination of resources from a Virginia Recovery grant of $35,000 and a $15,000 grant gift from Friends of Loudoun Mental Health.

Friends of Loudoun Mental Health is a nonprofit organization providing support for people affected by mental illness.

 

KME aligns with Trivision

KME Internet Marketing, of South Riding, has partnered with Trivision Studios of Chantilly to offer regional marketing and communication services to the metropolitan area.

The partnership enables delivery of coordinated, integrated omnimedia marketing and communications.

 

Best Buy recycling

Best Buy has launched a test of its newest electronics recycling program in 117 stores nationwide.

Best Buy stores across the county on June 1 started taking no more than two units per day, per household for recycling at no charge. Customers can bring items such as TVs, monitors (up to 32 inches), computers, phones, cameras and other electronic devices for recycling.
