Grimes to lead Pride basketball
Greg Grimes will place his undefeated record on the line this winter when he takes over as Heritage High School head boys' basketball coach.
Granted, that record consists of one game.
Grimes, who was an All-District hoops player at Loudoun County High School in 1985-1986, earned a victory in his lone head-coaching opportunity last season when previous coach Mark Mallisham was suspended for a game.
Grimes, 40, guided Heritage to a 68-56 victory over Handley last December in the Loudoun Times-Mirror Dulles/Northwestern District Basketball Challenge.
“I'm going to put that [record] on the line, take a risk with it,” joked Grimes, who recently was promoted to head coach after three seasons as an assistant to Mallisham.
Mallisham resigned after six seasons at Heritage to become head basketball coach at Forest Park High School, a Woodbridge school much closer to his Manassas home.
Heritage was consistently at the top of the Dulles District standings under Mallisham, winning an outright or shared district championship in each of the last three seasons.
Grimes, a business and accounting teacher at Heritage, said he's “passionate about high school basketball and coaching” and prefers the same up-tempo style that Mallisham employed with the Pride.
“I'm very excited about the opportunity,” said Grimes, who remains good friends with Mallisham. “Mallisham has built a very good tradition at Heritage. I'm looking forward to keeping that going and trying to build on it.”
