Bookkeeping, tax forum

Learn how to get your books straight and taxes in order with the Loudoun Small Business Development Center's seminar “Bookkeeping & Taxation for Small Businesses, at the Cascades Library, 21030 Whitfield Place, Sterling, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Mark Turbyfill, an independent consultant, will discuss setup of accounting records, including software and fixed asset schedule; monthly and quarterly filings and bookkeeping responsibilities; the four most common tax returns for companies; and important areas of corporate accounting.

Starting a business

Loudoun Small Business Development Center will hold a seminar on starting a business at Thomas Balch Library, 208 W. Market St., Leesburg from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Small-business specialists Deborah Roder and Robin Suomi will speak about essential steps for starting a business, and insurance specialist Terry Corle will give 21 marketing tips and talk about insurance needs.

Homeownership 101

The Loudoun County Department of Family Services will hold its next "Intro to Homeownership" class July 7 and July 9, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Cascades Library, 21030 Whitfield Place in Sterling.

The county provides free home-buyer education workshops to assist potential first-time home buyers in understanding the process. The six-hour workshop covers topics including budgeting, credit, working with Realtors, the mortgage process and what to expect at settlement.

The workshops are held several times throughout the year at various locations over a two-evening time period from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Attendance at both sessions is required. The class size for each workshop is limited, so early registration is advised. Participants must register by contacting Chris Vogel of the Department of Family Services at 703-777-0353. You can also contact Vogel if you need accommodation for physical, sensory or mental disability; three days' notice is requested.
