College Corner

McCowat to AIC

Dominion senior Geoffrey McCowat has agreed to a partial baseball scholarship with American International College, a Division II program in Springfield, Mass.

McCowat had a 1.05 ERA for the Titans this spring, accumulating 67 strikeouts in 40 and a third innings on the mound. He also set a Virginia High School League record for strikeouts in a seven-inning game when he punched out 20 March 18 against Gar-Field.

McCowat's father, Walter, who hails from Massachusetts, credits the promotional efforts of Dominion coach Jay Raines with landing McCowat a baseball scholarship.

Viking captains commit

Loudoun Valley senior captains Cindy Murphy and Morgan Maddox will play volleyball in college.

Murphy, a right side hitter, will continue her volleyball career at the University of Delaware.

Murphy was a two-time All-District and All-Region selection and earned Team MVP honors as a senior. Her older sister Val Murphy was a top volleyball performer for Delaware from 2001 to 2004.

Maddox has been accepted to James Madison University, where she will continue playing volleyball for the Dukes. Maddox earned All-District and All-Region honors for three seasons and was the Vikings' outstanding senior player last season.

Stevens to Limestone

Loudoun County High School senior Tyler Stevens has committed to join the Limestone College wrestling team next season.

Stevens was a standout wrestler during his four years with the Raiders, compiling a 116-32 record and winning two district championships.

Limestone College is in Gaffney, S.C., and competes at the Division II level.

Clearing hurdles

Heritage High School graduate Les Bradley was one of three athletes to represent the University of Miami men's track and field team at the NCAA East Region Track and Field Championships May 30-31 in Tallahassee, Fla.

Bradley competed in the 110-meter high hurdles. Despite finishing his heat in a personal best time of 14 seconds flat, Bradley did not advance to the finals.

Next year, Bradley will be a junior and will set his goals higher.

Block-ing shots

Freshman Laura Block, a graduate of Foxcroft School, recently completed her first season as a member of the Gettysburg College women’s lacrosse team.

As a goalie, Blocked totaled 76:44 in four appearances in goal. She was perfect in between the pipes for the Bullets, stopping all eight shots she saw. Block also played the entire second half of Gettysburg’s first shutout in eight years against Bryn Mawr College, tying a season high with three saves.

Gettysburg put together an impressive campaign in 2008, posting a record of 17-4 overall, including 8-1 in the Centennial Conference, and securing its seventh consecutive bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Gettysburg ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation during the year and finished the season ranked seventh.
