United to lay off 950 pilots

United Airlines announced June 23 that 950 pilots will be laid off and domestic flights will be reduced due to increasing fuel prices.

The layoffs will go into effect in September.

Earlier this month, United announced cuts of 1,400 to 1,600 salaried and management employees.

United employs 1,750 people at Dulles, which is one of the airline's five U.S. hubs.

United also declared it will eliminate a total of 100 aircraft from its fleet, including 30 Boeing 737s, six Boeing 747s and its Ted fleet. The company also will reduce its domestic capacity by 14 percent.

Fleet reductions will begin in spring 2009 and be completed by the end of 2009.
