Airline reduces flights

Continental Airlines will discontinue service to Washington Dulles International Airport from two hub stations and reduce its frequency of flights nationwide starting Sept. 3.

These actions are among the many difficult steps CO is taking to respond to record-high fuel prices that are creating unprecedented challenges for the airline industry,” the company stated in a message sent to employees June 12.

Continental will reduce domestic capacity by 11 percent, according to the statement, and will discontinue service to Dulles from Houston George Bush Intercontinental and Cleveland Hopkins International airports.

Three daily flights from Cleveland and four daily flights from Houston are being eliminated. There will still be six daily flights from Newark Liberty Airport, according to Kelly Cripe, spokeswoman for the airline.

As reported last week, Continental will eliminate 3,000 positions across the company. Those who have already booked flights for after Sept. 3 will be contacted by Continental to make alternate arrangements.
