Parts of major motion picture filmed locally
Local movie-buff bloggers have been buzzing about news that a Hollywood production crew was filming a major motion picture in the area.Several posts recently appeared online describing sightings of crews and actors filming the second "Transformers" movie at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum facility near Washington Dulles International Airport last weekend.
The first "Transformers" movie by Dreamworks was released in 2007 and ultimately made nearly $320 million domestically, according to www.boxofficemogo.com, which tracks ticket sales.
Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center spokesman Frank McNally did confirm that parts of a motion picture by Dreamworks had been filmed at the museum June 6-8, and that crews left the area on June 9, not to return. However, McNally was not permitted to confirm which movie was being filmed.
"We have certain agreements with the company," he said.
McNally did say, though, that actor Shia LeBeouf, who starred in the first "Transformers" and who is now in the latest "Indian Jones" movie, was there.
What's more, according to a posting on the Web site www.superherohype.com,
"Transformers" director Michael Bay and actress Megan Fox, who was also in the first "Transformers," were also seen at the museum over the weekend.
Except for certain sections of the facility, McNally said the museum remained open throughout filming, which he said drew onlookers. He also said this was the "first major motion picture" filmed at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, which opened December 2003.
The movie, according to Bay's official Web site, will be called "Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen" and will be released next summer.
