A walk-in surprise

By Hannah Hager

To drive by this home and shrug it off as your typical old, white house would be to do it an injustice. The designers of this home, constructed in the late 19th century, had elegance and modernism in mind. Clearly, this loving care has been passed down from homeowner to homeowner ever since.

Several original characteristics of the house remain, from the random-width hardwood flooring to the wavy glass windows.

Such is also true in the family room that features a beautiful stone-lined fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the town's main strip.

Through the family room is a smaller den which could double as a lower-level bedroom. Just outside is a full bathroom, which is beautifully maintained with an upgraded shower head and tile walls. Out the door of the bathroom is the sunroom, which is part of an addition put on the house in the 1980s.

The kitchen is the true gem of the house. The list of name-brand appliances includes an Aga stove with a hood, a Sharp microwave drawer, a Viking refrigerator and freezer, and a deep sink with an apron walk-up.

Just outside the kitchen is the dining room – complete with chair rails and an exquisite fireplace that will engulf you with its grandeur.

Two staircases leading to the upper level are in the dining room and the main foyer. The two stairways meet at the top – where a cozy sitting room with built-in bookshelves awaits.

The master bedroom is at the front of the house. Beautiful wood-paneled doors enclose his-and-her closets, which are separated by a linen closet.

Walking out of the master bedroom, step down and to the right is the upper-level full bathroom. It too is very well-kept for an older home. Tile flooring continues up the wall, and the room also has an upgraded sink and fixtures.

At the back end of the house is the large third bedroom. It has several windows and a large walk-in closet that could be used as a sewing or craft room. A few steps up lead outdoors to the rooftop balcony.

The pool area is barely visible from the road and it's a good thing -- you can come here to escape. The oval-shaped pool has been meticulously maintained. It sits behind a detached garage and is surrounded by a large patio with gardens and mature trees, even a greenhouse.

Just beyond the fence surrounding the pool is a peaceful pond. Near the pond is a two-story barn that is perfect as a workshop for a craftsman – a craftsman looking to be the next caretaker of this home.
