Of Mice and Sugarplums
Clara, the Nutcracker, the Mouse King are everywhere; 'The Nutcracker' has become a staple of the season, not just in the United States, but around the world. The magic of this fairy-tale ballet has proven itself timeless. No matter how old a child gets, no matter how many times and variations of the classic you've seen, only the coldest of hearts do not respond to the elegance, the wonder of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's music, E.T.A. Hoffman's story, and Marius Petipa's choreography. This is always a special season for the Loudoun Ballet Company. Its founder, Sheila Hoffman-Robertson, was not only a nationally acclaimed ballerina and ballet teacher in her own right, she is a direct descendant of the man who wrote the book. Although she no longer lives in the area, she maintains close touch with the company she founded 30 years ago, passing the torch to Artistic Director Maureen Miller and Ballet Mistress Lisa Startsman.
While it's possible to stay at home and watch the show on television or go to a local movie theater, there is nothing like the immediacy and energy to be found in a theater where the dancers and the musicians are anything but virtual.
They are very real.
And so is the dream.
