Save the Silo: The fate of the CountrySide Shopping Center’s iconic silo is a matter of some debate these days. The silo is a remnant of the Pidgeon family farm originally located on the property. Pidgeon Hill Drive, the street surrounding the shopping center, is named after the family. The talk swirling around the community is that Saul Centers, owner of the CountrySide Shopping Center, is mulling options for the silo and the structure attached to it.
When the new year begins, the Los Toltecos Restaurant that currently uses the silo as a storage area will have moved across the parking lot, into a free-standing building next to the Starbucks with the drive-in window. Around that point in time, the former home of Los Toltecos could become a construction zone. One of the possible construction projects mentioned for the area is an extension of the parking lot.
Concerned CountrySide residents are offering a variety of solutions to keep the landmark structure in place. Loudoun County Potomac Supervisor Andrea McGimsey, a CountrySide resident, has drafted a petition asking Saul Centers to save the silo. McGimsey is gathering signatures for the petition, distributing copies of the petition to area residents interested in obtaining additional signatures and collecting messages from area residents on their thoughts about the meaning of the CountrySide silo to the community. To join the campaign to save this local landmark, contact Supervisor McGimsey at Andrea.McGimsey@loudoun.gov.

First place went to Park View High School, the host of the event, with 270 points on the scoreboard. The second half of the Scholastic Challenge takes place in April.
