Board sacks Redskins deal

A teaming of the Washington Redskins football team and Loudoun County has been benched, for this season at least.

Loudoun's Board of Supervisors voted 5 to 4 against forming a marketing partnership with the team for a fee of $250,000 a year.

Had it been approved, the marriage would have allowed the county logo to be placed on the Skins' Web site and would have given the county access to other media outlets – such as radio and television -- affiliated with the team.

Those for the agreement said having a Redskins connection would beef up tourism in the county and help ensure the future presence of the football team in Loudoun.

Talks between the county and Redskins' leadership also suggested the possibility of building a Redskins hall of fame in Loudoun.

Those who were against the marriage said the county's logo was not prominent on the Skins' Web site and they had concerns about joining logos with a corporation.

“We're giving money to the second richest franchise in the NFL,” said Supervisor Jim Burton (I-Blue Ridge).

Supervisor Stevens Miller (D-Dulles) also voted against the marketing partnership. “I don't think it's a good fit for us.” He said he was trying to protect the county from any legal obligations or liabilities linked with a Redskins deal.

“A deal with the NFL would literally be out of my league,” Miller said.

Those supervisors on the other bench were adamant about how a coupling with the Redskins would benefit Loudoun's business community.

“Two thousand eyes would see our logo a day,” said Chairman Scott York (I-at large). For a small amount of money, he said, county businesses and tourism trade would be rewarded.

Supervisor Lori Waters (R-Broad Run) agreed, saying: “This is a one year partnership. This would position the county for the future. We are getting a 7-figure deal” for $250,000.

Later during the Dec. 2 board meeting, Waters tried to have board members reconsider the denial by asking that the board forward the proposal to a county committee to look at under the FY10 budget, rather than the FY09 budget. Her request failed.

Hard to believe. The Skins have been a great neighbor in Loudoun. I imagine the franchise will not look favorably on this vote. The "nos" should have fun answering for this come re-election time.
