Time For Cover Crops, Fool!
Ok, so maybe BA Baraccas (Mr. T for the non A-Team fans out there) never said EXACTLY those words, but he certainly would pity the farmer who declined the opportunity to trap nutrients and topsoil on their fields during the winter months to prepare them for the next growing season. The Loudoun Soil and Water Conservation District has funds available for farmers who plant cover crops like winter wheat, rye, and others. The per acre payment varies on when the crop is planted, what type of seed is used, and whether the crop will be harvested in the spring. Thats right, Harvestable cover crops can now be covered by cost share. Right about now, Hannibal would be saying "I love it when a plan comes together."
To make the cover crop plan come together, call the Loudoun Soil and Water Conservation District office at 703-777-2075 or e-mail chris.vanvlack@va.nacdnet.net . The deadline for some of the programs arrives in mid October, so call now. If you miss the deadline, the only fool to be pitied will be yourself.
