The Ballad of Fred, the Marathon Flag Waver, Traffic Directing ... Guy.
When you drive past a flag waver on a construction site, do you ever wonder about their hopes, dreams and aspirations? Probably not. I bet you didn't realize that directing traffic isn't the end-all, be-all, of flag wavers. Their is one coveted position among all road construction flagmen.
This is the tale of an unsung hero of the Olympic games. Most of you watched the Olympics this year, from the digitally enhanced fireworks of the opening ceremonies, to the gold medal basketball game played at 2 am.
You may have seen this man's work at the end of this years Marathon. As Sammy Wanjiru from Kenya entered the Olympic stadium the last obstacle in his way was a savage right turn onto the track. Without the aid of the courageous flag waver guy, he might have veered off course, missing his chance for gold.
This is what flag waver guys call "The Show". Here is the story of one such man, in his quest for personal glory, for his country and the Universe.
Fred was a road construction worker. Directing traffic all day long for the state transportation authority. In the smoldering, summer heat, a certain someone, from a certain something, was about to change Fred's life forever.
