The Bigger Stage

The Bigger Stage

Here in Loudoun, it’s all too easy to quickly become busy and focused on family matters, children’s events and very local concerns. So much calls for immediate, personal attention, right in our own homes – obviously an inescapable situation with small children! Every so often, however, all Loudoun families, communities and businesses benefit when our individual awareness raises a bit to consider county-wide concerns, and perhaps engage a little.

There’s always something more we can do for our individual schools, for example, from volunteering in the classrooms to helping teachers with particular assignments. But the school system is county-run, and the School Board meetings every month are chock full of interesting topics and opportunities to provide feedback – plus the new Administration Building in Ashburn is a great place to visit and see historic displays of Loudoun schools. Several Board Members even have blogs – read and comment!

New community developments and retail are always interesting topics around the neighborhood – but do you agree with the progress, or can’t understand why your intersection doesn’t have a traffic signal? Loudoun Board of Supervisors and related meetings, with public input sessions, happen several times a month – and usually the topics and discussion directly impact the future of your neighborhood or commute. The Supervisors themselves – we voted for them last fall, and now they want to hear from you over the next 4 years - in person, by email or phone. Contribute also to wikis concerning everything from Loudoun Library resources to New Retail in Dulles South.

While political races tend to dominate national news, here in Virginia and Loudoun, we’re also constantly electing new leadership at many levels – from PTAs and HOA boards to county-wide leaders. This fall’s election will result in a new US President; but also representatives from our region in the US Congress. Local candidates, along with local media and even political blogs, all want your input and insight – write an email, respond to a blog, vote!

These are just a few areas where we can raise our game a little, to a bigger stage, benefiting all of us in Loudoun County.
